100%’: Conor Coady shares what he’d be doing if he was still at Wolves amid doubts over Neto’s future

Nathan Collins' potential arrival at Wolves could mean Conor Coady plays far less in 2022/23

Amidst uncertainties surrounding Pedro Neto’s future, former Wolves defender Conor Coady has revealed what he would do if he was still with the team this summer.

After a strong first season with the Wolves, Gary O’Neil is looking to bolster his team, so it could be a fascinating summer at Molineux.

After a trialling summer last year, the Old Gold improved their 2022–2023 total by five points, and a string of outstanding performances suggested that the club was back on the right track.

O’Neil will now try to cover up the gaps that started to show this season; squad depth is a major issue that has to be addressed during the transfer window.

The manager hopes to sign players but also wants to hold onto some of his top players, as rumours about Pedro Neto’s future are starting to circulate.

What Conor Coady would do to keep Pedro Neto at the Wolves

Selling the winger, who began the 2023–24 season in incredible form, has advantages and disadvantages. Former Wolves defender Conor Coady has shared what he would do if he were still a teammate of the Portugal international.

In an interview with Mark Chapman for the BBC Football Daily podcast, Coady compared his experience at Wolves to the issues Crystal Palace might have this summer in light of losing their finest players.

Pedro Neto (L) and Conor Coady of Wolverhampton Wanderers warm up during a Wolverhampton Wanderers Training Session at The Sir Jack Hayward Trainin...

“We believed that [major player losses] occurred annually. Even now, when I saw Pedro Neto at the football team, we believed that Diogo Jota was lost annually when Pedro Neto was there.

The 31-year-old centre back replied as follows when Chapman asked if he would text the players to request to stay:

“You want to keep your best players because you want to improve every year, so without a doubt, you want them to stay 100% of the summer.”

With speculation mounting ahead of the transfer window, maybe the Wolves players currently in O’Neil’s squad could take note of Coady’s approach to keep talented players like Neto.

Newcastle United and Manchester City are the targets. Pedro Neto

Wolves will have a tough time holding onto Neto this summer because rumours have already identified the teams that are interested in the winger.

The Telegraph reported yesterday that the Old Gold will want a payment of about £60 million from Neto’s supporters. Manchester City and Newcastle United are two of the teams who are reportedly interested in signing the 24-year-old.

Coady pointed out that, given the calibre of play he shown last season, Wolves players ought to do every effort to retain Neto before the 2024–2025 campaign; yet, the player’s prospects are not limited to his skill alone.

With another injury-plagued year limiting his Premier League debut total to only 18 starts in 2023–2024, Wolves may find it tough to reject a bid of up to £60 million for Neto.

The Portugal international hasn’t played a full season at Wolves since 2020–2021, and another year of injury concerns could lower his asking price. That means now might be the best moment to cash in.
