Southampton might consider making a deal this summer with the newly relegated Premier League teams.
Russell Martin will be hoping to avoid what occurred to the three clubs that were promoted from the Championship in the 2022–2023 season, as they all face an immediate return to the second division.
Burnley and Sheffield United put on particularly poor games, and although Luton Town battled hard, they ultimately lost to relegation.
Southampton needs to add more players to its squad in order to get ready for the Premier League. There’s hope that Flynn Downes and Ryan Fraser, who had fantastic loan seasons last season, will return permanently.
That won’t be enough on its own, though, so Southampton has to consider rostering these three players who were just demoted.
Southampton should target Gustavo Hamer
In an effort to strengthen the attack, Ben Brereton Diaz, who played the majority of the season on loan at Sheffield United, has already been strongly linked to Southampton.
Apart than talking with Villareal, the forward’s parent club, the Saints ought to think about pursuing midfielder Gustavo Hamer.
The Dutchman was one of the few bright lights for the Blades during a dismal season that saw them finish last with just 16 points.
Still, Hamer had four goals and six assists in the league at the end of the season, proving the kind of talent that only the summer before saw Sheffield United agree to pay Coventry City £15,000 million for his services.
Soon after his arrival, Paul Heckingbottom, the manager at the time, described him as tenacious. He keeps on moving. He has the courage to grab opportunities and is not afraid to take chances. He’s prepared to see things through to the end as well.
He went on, “He will run back, he will tackle, and he will compete.” That type of personality is infectious in others.
Stuart Armstrong will depart this summer when his contract expires, the organisation has confirmed, and Hamer might be the man to take his position in the midfield.
