3 managers Huddersfield Town must consider after André Breitenreiter exit

As revealed by their official club website, Huddersfield Town severed ways with André Breitenreiter over the weekend in the wake of their Championship relegation.

Huddersfield Town is looking to launch an instant promotion campaign, and they are searching for a new manager to guide them into League One. The Terriers must decide who will be the next player to play at John Smith’s Stadium.

On the last day of the 2023–24 season, they were formally demoted following a loss to Suffolk Town. They lost together with Birmingham City and neighbouring Yorkshire team Rotherham United, but Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth Argyle, and Blackburn Rovers managed to remain up.

Here’s a look at some potential Breitenreiter replacements for the dugout.

Liam Rosendor

He is undoubtedly a front-runner for the Huddersfield Town position given his abrupt departure from Hull City. Before being fired by Acun Ilicali, the 39-year-old led the Tigers to a 7th-place finish in the second division this past season. He began his coaching career with Derby County after hanging up his boots.

Rosenior will now be considering his options, and it’s unclear if he would move down a level following his stint at MKM Stadium. He is a manager who prefers to take the easy route and, all things considered, performed a respectable job in East Yorkshire.

Alex Neil

The Scotsman led Sunderland to play-off victory in 2022, so he understands what it takes to climb out of League One. He might view the Terriers’ assignment as a chance to reenter the contest and establish a point.

Since severing relations with the Potters in December, 42-year-old Neil has been available. He most recently managed Stoke City. He has also managed in the Premier League with the Canaries as recently as 2017 and has previously had positions at Hamilton Academical, Norwich City, and Preston North End.

Grant McCann

His Doncaster Rovers team just lost on penalties against Crew Alexandra in the second leg of their League Two play-off semi-final. They surged into the top seven with a run of 11 straight victories, but they were unable to advance.

Hull City’s McCann won the third division championship in 2021, therefore, Huddersfield Town may consider him in their pursuit of Breitenreiter’s replacement. In addition to working at Peterborough United and Doncaster Rovers in the past, he has held their post before.
