“£8-£10m” – Eiran Cashin claim made amid potential Derby County bidding war

The Irish defender has been the subject of interest from Premier League sides in the past

After a two-year break, Derby County is getting ready for life again in the Championship.

Since the end of their last season in the second division, when they were relegated back to the division with a heavy 21-point deduction due to serious and well-documented financial difficulties, the East Midlands team’s situation has undergone significant upheaval.

But over the aforementioned time frame, we began to witness a number of Rams academy grads break through into the first squad, mostly out of need, which also helped them to build strong bases for their two League One campaigns.

And it’s fair to assume that the ceiling for one of those native talents is significantly higher than the second tier.

Derby County, Eiran Cashin transfer fee claim made

That’s because, with over 120 competitive outings at Pride Park to her credit, Eiran Cashin has been one of the most impressive performers, especially under Paul Warne.

The 22-year-old is Derby’s most valuable asset, and it should come as no surprise that Premier League teams are showing interest in him given his present form and potential, says our Rams fan pundit Shaun Woodward.

When FLW questioned Woodward about which player in the current team the team would demand the greatest fee for, he said, “Cashin, hands down.” I doubt that anyone else could say that.”

“He’s young, and he’s played a lot of football in League One and the Championship.” Our fan commentator declared, “He’s the whole package; he’s got tonnes of experience.”

“He’s a great ball player, he’s a leader, he’s quicker than he looks, he reads the game amazingly, he sets off most of our attacks from the back, and when he wasn’t playing for a few games, we really missed him.”

“He’s just an absolute beast of a centre-half, and I think if we can get a bidding war going, I think realistically, now we’re back in the Championship, he could be going for £8-£10m,” said Woodward.

“I understand that some other clubs might find that funny, but there have been players who have left for other Championship sides for between £10 and £15 million. If we had teams competing for a player like Cashin, there’s no reason he couldn’t demand that money.”

He said: “Obviously, I’d never want him to leave, but I think if we struggle this season or, god forbid, go back down, he needs to move on and I’d definitely be looking at around £8-£10m for him.”

Eiran Cashin’s performances in Derby County’s promotion-winning season

Derby could sell Eiran Cashin

The Republic of Ireland international’s play in the Rams’ promotion season only moved up a notch after he was voted the team’s Young Player of the Season back in 2022–2023; he won the honour for a second consecutive season.

Cashin was a vital component of Derby’s most formidable defence in the previous season’s third division, as the Mansfield-born defender amassed some remarkable defensive stats and posed a threat from attacking set pieces. Throughout their 46 league games, Derby gave up just 37 goals.

Along with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, he was undoubtedly one of two club players named to the EFL League One Team of the Season. He has certainly shown that he can carry over this form into the Championship, where he has already played, having made eighteen appearances under Wayne Rooney two seasons prior.

Derby County’s significant power in any potential Eiran Cashin departure

David Clowes

Cashin has already demonstrated maturity in his three seasons of consistent first-team action, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone if top division clubs showed interest in him again over the summer.

The good news for Derby supporters, though, is that they have a considerable amount of negotiating power now that Cashin has committed to the team through the summer of 2027 after accepting a new contract in January.

This followed intense interest from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of last year, when Roberto De Zerbi’s team was unable to match the £3 million asking price set by the Rams leadership. That price tag included the possibility of a loan-back for Derby during the season that ultimately resulted in promotion.

With Cashin’s recent departure, it is unclear if the Seagulls will rekindle their interest in him, but it is almost a given that he will eventually sign a contract with a Premier League team.

Given his excellent performance history since the previously mentioned £3 million asking price was mentioned, David Clowes’ strategy of driving any prospective buyers towards a hard bargain—which may ultimately result in a price closer to Woodward’s recommended figures—is therefore totally justified.
