Welington, the defender for São Paulo, has reached a pre-contract agreement with Southampton and will sign a personal terms agreement with them in the following days.
TNT Sports Brazil claims that Southampton has begun moves to sign the young player and that the Brazilian club has not yet been informed of the situation.
The 24-year-old’s São Paulo contract expires in December of this year, and as of right now, he has not signed an extension.
The player has accepted a four-year contract offer from Southampton, so it is unlikely that would happen at this point, according to TNT.
He has not notified São Paulo of his decision yet, and he is anticipated to sign a pre-contract deal with them in the next few days.
They had been getting ready to offer the left-back a contract extension, but Southampton seems to have moved quickly to sign him later this year on a free transfer.
Although TNT Sports does not mention a price should the Saints choose to do so, they will have to cover the left-back’s early release if they wish to sign him this summer.
It could be the intention to sign Welington to a pre-contract agreement and then approach São Paulo, with the knowledge that the Brazilian team will have to make a deal or risk losing the player for free.
In any case, the Saints have taken the initiative and seem to be getting their man; he is anticipated to sign that contract in the next few days.
