NBA agent Bernie Lee, who represents Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat and Ben Simmons of the Brooklyn Nets, responded to criticism from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith regarding Simmons’ recent decisions and performance. During a recent podcast, Smith suggested Simmons was fortunate not to be “in prison for theft,” alluding to concerns over his availability, and questioned his choice to train in Miami, a city known for distractions.
Lee’s response to Smith’s comments reflects the differing perspectives of two outspoken figures in the sports world. Given their outspoken nature, such disagreements are not entirely surprising, and it remains to be seen if Smith will address Lee’s remarks in the coming days.
Simmons is currently aiming to rebound after a challenging stretch marked by injuries. He played just 15 games in the 2023-24 season, following a similarly limited 42-game appearance the season before, and missed the entirety of the 2021-22 campaign due to various reasons.
Despite these setbacks, Simmons, a three-time All-Star, remains a highly skilled player whose commitment has occasionally been questioned. Since joining the Nets, he has not consistently displayed his best form on the court.
Lee’s staunch defense of his clients, including Butler, underscores his loyalty and support as both players gear up for the upcoming season. Butler, recovering from injury that sidelined him during the 2024 NBA Playoffs, aims to lead the Heat back to contention, possibly towards an NBA Championship.
Interestingly, Simmons and Butler were once teammates on the Philadelphia 76ers, where reports suggested a strained relationship. Nevertheless, Lee remains a steadfast advocate for both players, ensuring they have the support needed to prove their critics wrong on the court.
