Exclusive: Coventry City boss on exactly why he wasted no time at all in re-signing Luis Binks

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as Mark Robins explains his thinking behind getting loan centre-half back to the CBS Arena in permanent deal

Luis Binks has joined Coventry City on a permanent deal

Mark Robins has shared his rationale for re-signing Luis Binks and clarified why the summer acquisition from Bologna didn’t feature as much as the player would have liked during his season-long loan last term.

The Sky Blues acted swiftly to convert the 22-year-old’s loan into a permanent deal this summer, investing £1.7 million for the center-half who signed a four-year contract amid significant interest from other clubs.

When asked if it was an obvious decision to bring Binks back to the CBS Arena if the finances worked out, Robins told CoventryLive: “He is a top person and wants to be a top player. He has excellent attributes, as demonstrated when he played outstandingly against Manchester United at Wembley.

“His ball-handling skills are brilliant, and he’s a talented player and a great person to have around. When we saw an opportunity to sign him permanently, we took it, despite considerable interest from other clubs, and we are delighted to have secured his return.”

Binks was limited to just 15 Championship starts and 23 appearances in all competitions last season. Explaining the situation, Robins said: “He was in and out of the team. He struggled during a two-month period when I stuck with the same back four for consistency, as we hadn’t won enough games early in the season, and the players in those positions were performing well and helping us pick up points.

“Despite his frustrations, he continued to work hard, which impressed me about him.”

Binks will likely start the season ahead of his nearest competitor, Liam Kitching, who is suspended for the opening game at Stoke due to a red card received at Blackburn at the end of last season.
