As he progresses “towards elite” at the Championship club, Mark Robins has provided an explanation of his two-for-one coaching philosophy to his Coventry City coaching staff this summer.
Dennis Lawrence left the Sky Blues for Minnesota United in April, so the team brought in individual coaching guru Rhys Carr and former favorite George Boateng earlier this month.Their entrances followed the abrupt and shocking departure of assistant manager Adi Viveash, raising concerns about whether the two new hires were also brought in to replace him.
However, the team has subsequently posted job openings for a new Head Coach, a position that will see the chosen candidate assume many of the duties that Viveash previously held.
Robins gave CoventryLive an explanation of his reasoning for the backroom shuffle, saying, “With regard to the two boys who came in, during the interview process I was building in my head what it would look like.”
“We want to do all in our power to provide every player with the best chance to reach their full potential. That’s the goal, and while our backroom staff currently lags well behind that of other Championship clubs, we are making progress in that direction.
“We are approaching the elite. We’re looking for an elite setting, and Claire-Marie (Roberts), the performance director, is a great fit. She is incredibly intelligent, creative, and has some excellent ideas. What’s really helpful is that she acts and speaks with such composure and consideration.
“It is heading in that direction; we are trying to move towards an elite environment, changing things and operating in a different way.”
The manager responded, “They have specific roles,” when asked about Boateng and Carr’s responsibilities. But we have more helpers now and in the future, so we can make sure the players receive all the attention they require—perhaps even some one-on-one time.
“To be honest with you, they have taken off really quickly, but they are still getting their bearings. These guys are awesome. George still has a lot to offer and is incredibly humble, so I’m thrilled with how things are going so far.
