‘It’s natural’ – Martin confirms three positions Saints want to sign players in

Russell Martin, the manager, acknowledged that he is actively involved in transfers and disclosed the three positions that the Saints are trying to bolster.

Although Saints have already added seven players this summer, there will likely be more additions and departures before the transfer market closes on Friday, August 30.

Despite acknowledging they do not have “huge amounts” of money to spend, they have been connected to attacking midfielders, wingers, and a number nine.

As he talked about the team’s transfer plan for the remaining weeks of the window, Martin revealed that Saints desire to add in each of those areas.

Martin told the Daily Echo at their training camp in Spain: “It has been a focus of mine, along with the owners, Phil Parsons, and everyone else.

“Almost every day, there is a discussion with the ownership group regarding recruitment in between training sessions.

It’s a phone call, or a few phone calls, if not. We’ll likely transact a good amount of business straight away, but getting the appropriate players takes time.”

“I’m really happy and comfortable with what we are working on and how we’re going about it,” he continued. All you can do is hope it all comes to fruition.”

In addition to being interested in teenage attacker Liam Delap and Sunderland winger Jack Clarke, Saints hope to sign Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley.

Martin reaffirmed that these three places will be the focus of recruitment, adding, “That makes sense—Che Adams left.

Saints must replace former striker Che Adams this summer

“That makes sense—David Brooks, who was a tremendously strong player for us, and Ryan Fraser went. Then Joe Rothwell and Stuart Armstrong were gone.

It is organic. Players who had a positive impact and were highly effective for us have left gaps.

“I think it’s only natural we want to try and make sure we replace them with enough quality, and good enough quality to be in the Premier League.”

If Mat Lis departs the team once more this summer—which Martin has previously flagged as a possibility—Saints will also want to sign a goalkeeper.
