Breaking News: Fabrizio Romano Wolves have now made first move to sign Burnley star Kompany loves

Wolves have initiated discussions with Burnley to sign defender Maxime Esteve, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Gary O’Neil’s side lost captain Max Kilman earlier in the summer, as he joined West Ham United and former manager Julen Lopetegui in a £40 million deal. Now, they are searching the market to find his replacement.

However, Wolves face stiff competition for the 22-year-old centre-back, as Romano reports that it is currently an “open race.”

After losing Kilman, O’Neil finds himself short of options in the center of defense, and Frenchman Esteve has emerged as a target.

According to Romano, a move for Esteve is “one to watch” as several Premier League clubs are exploring a move for the Burnley defender to bolster their options, although these clubs remain unnamed.

So far this summer, Wolves have signed Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima, and Tommy Doyle permanently, and Jorgen Strand Larsen on loan from Celta Vigo. Several first-team players are also returning from loan spells, including Daniel Podence, Fabio Silva, and center-back Yerson Mosquera.

Esteve was a regular for the Clarets in the 2023/24 season, making 16 appearances after joining in January. Despite his efforts, he couldn’t prevent their relegation to the Championship. However, his performances showed great potential, explaining why numerous clubs are interested in signing him. Burnley may need to raise funds after their relegation, making Esteve a viable target.

Additionally, Wolves have been linked with a move for Porto defender David Carmo, who has been compared to the Portuguese Van Dijk in the past.

Wolves Could Lose Pedro Neto

While the club seeks a new defender to replace their captain, they may also need to bolster their forward line if star player Pedro Neto departs.

The Portugal international has attracted interest from Tottenham and Arsenal this summer, with Spurs prioritizing a forward who can play across the front line, according to Michael Bridge.

Wolves are demanding £60 million for the 24-year-old, which has deterred potential suitors so far. However, as the transfer deadline approaches, a deal might be reached to fund new arrivals for O’Neil.
