Just Now: What Latics boss Mellon said about the new season

Micky Mellon is hoping that Oldham Athletic can find new life with a new style of play.

Latics play their first game of the new campaign this afternoon at home against recently promoted Braintree Town (3pm kickoff).

Additionally, Mellon is hoping that a complete preseason, some new players joining the team, and a new system would help them in their quest to bring success to Boundary Park after the disappointment of their ambitions of finishing in the top seven fading in a disappointing conclusion to the 2023–24 campaign.

“I wanted to build it around what we thought would help us try to try to win games from the group that we inherited and try to inject some pace into the wide areas.” The Latics manager continued, “And then we wanted the player’s character that we thought would be needed in order to play for a successful Oldham team.”

“That’s how everyone got recruited. I’m really happy with the players we’ve brought in; I think they’ve all showed their abilities and blended in well with the guys that were with us the previous season.

“We brought in players like Manny (Monthe) in an attempt to try to play a certain system, but as time went on, you realised that we needed some pace in wider areas, so we had a tonne of options.”

“We haven’t been able to collaborate with Norwood and Garner, which is the only thing I would say I’m disappointed about.

“Alex Reid and Mike Fondop have performed admirably, but it would have been excellent to have Norwood and Garner—two strikers who are well-known to be among the best in the game—mixed in as well.

“But on the whole I’m happy and pleased with where we’re up to and looking forward to getting going.”

Regan Ogle, Josh Kay, Manny Monthe, Harry Charsley, Jesurun Uchegbulam, Jake Caprice, and goalie Scott Moloney are among the seven summer recruits that Latics have made, all of whom have agreed to terms. However, because there is no transfer window, there is still opportunity to add more players during the season.

“I believe we’ve covered every aspect at this point, but perhaps we could add one or two more. However, we have prepared for every scenario, so even in the unlikely case of misfortune or accidents, we would be secure in every situation,” Mellon stated.

“But it’s crucial to note that we have strong competition in every section of the pitch. Not to mention, all of the players we brought in this year are really athletic and have the ability to run, so that’s another significant factor.

“We’re happy and satisfied.

“I’m pretty thrilled with how the preseason has gone. I’m pleased with it.

“If you could have offered me where we are sitting right now, I would have taken it without hesitation.

“I’m really excited to get going now, we’re ready to go.”
