He noticed a change in energy, especially during the warm-up against Sunderland, and emphasized the crucial role of fan support. He urged the fans to bring their energy to upcoming matches, even though Swansea is a long trip away.
Hughes, who has been with North End since the summer of 2018, spent two and a half years under Lowe. During that time, the team finished 13th, 12th, and 10th in the league. While Hughes enjoyed the first six months under Lowe, especially with the addition of Cameron Archer, he recognized that the team’s style of play and lack of consistency contributed to the frustration.
Reflecting on the end of Lowe’s tenure, Hughes noted that the team had become predictable and played the same formation for a long stretch. Despite these challenges, Hughes believed that Lowe had done a good job overall and stressed the need for the players to restore energy and focus moving forward.
For now, Hughes is confident in interim boss Mike Marsh, who has been a steady presence at the club since December 2021. Marsh led the team to victory in their first match under his charge, and Hughes is confident that Marsh will have the team well-prepared for their upcoming game against Swansea. Hughes praised Marsh as an exceptional coach with the respect of the players and valuable experience from top teams.
