Report: Southampton now eyeing move for “extraordinary” Brighton star, he started this weekend

Southampton are considering a bid for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jason Steele, as reported by Darren Witcoop. Steele played in Brighton’s first match of the 2024/25 Premier League season, where he kept a clean sheet in their 3-0 win over Everton.

Even though Steele started under Fabian Hurzeler in their opening game, his position as the primary goalkeeper is not guaranteed. Bart Verbruggen had more Premier League appearances last season, and Steele was regarded as one of the top backup keepers in England.

Given this, Brighton might be open to selling Steele to Southampton. The Saints’ regular goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu, has been sidelined with a ruptured Achilles tendon since late in the 2023/24 season, leading Alex McCarthy to start in their first Premier League match of the season. With Bazunu’s return uncertain, Southampton are looking for a new goalkeeper, and Steele might fit the bill.

The keeper’s ability to play out with his feet suits their football

Jason Steele, praised as ‘extraordinary’ by Breaking The Lines, has built a strong reputation for his skillful play with the ball at his feet. This ability has become increasingly sought after in the transfer market. Given Martin’s possession-based approach at Southampton, Steele would be a perfect match for their style of play, and it appears Southampton are considering a move for him, according to Witcoop.

Brighton, meanwhile, seem to be planning for life without Steele. They’ve opted to keep 23-year-old goalkeeper Carl Rushworth for the season, indicating their preparation for a future that may not include Steele.

Rushworth Will Stay at Brighton

He’s received interest from Sheffield United and Swansea

Carl Rushworth

A clear sign that Brighton might be preparing for Steele’s potential departure is their decision to retain Carl Rushworth this season. The former Halifax Town goalkeeper has been loaned out for the past three years to Walsall, Lincoln City, and Swansea City.

This summer, Rushworth has attracted interest from Sheffield United and Swansea for another loan move. However, it looks like Brighton are set on keeping him at the American Express Stadium for the time being. Should Steele move to Southampton, Rushworth could end up playing a more significant role than he anticipated at the start of the season.
