Preston expected to appoint new manager ahead of Luton Town fixture

Ryan Lowe and Mike Marsh have both departed Preston North End, leaving the club without a manager. According to the *Lancashire Post*, PNE aims to appoint a new manager before their match against Luton Town next weekend.

Although no one has been offered the position yet, the club has a shortlist of candidates and is expected to make a decision by Tuesday. Initially, a list of 65 names was considered, which has since been narrowed down.

Ryan Lowe’s unexpected departure was confirmed on Monday, just one game into the 2024/25 season. Mike Marsh, who served as interim manager, led the team to a 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Sunderland alongside coach Peter Murphy and player-coach Ched Evans. However, PNE were then defeated 3-0 by Swansea City, one of Marsh’s former clubs. Following this loss, Marsh did not attend the post-match press conference, and it was announced that he would neither be applying for the permanent role nor continuing in his interim capacity.

At the time of writing, former Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom is the favorite to take over, with other contenders including ex-Manchester City EDS coach Brian Barry-Murphy, experienced Championship manager Gary Rowett, and Crawley Town boss Scott Lindsey. Barry-Murphy has reportedly applied for the job, and Heckingbottom is said to be interested. Additionally, former PNE manager Alex Neil, who left Stoke City in December, has shown interest in returning, though contact with him has been minimal so far.
