LATEST NEWS: AFLW new season approaches

AFLW boss Emma Moore is confident the competition will continue to grow

New AFLW boss Emma Moore is confident that the competition can build on its current momentum to meet key metrics for further expansion. The 2024 season kicks off during the AFL pre-finals bye, with Sydney set to host Collingwood at North Sydney Oval on Friday night.

The 18-team league will feature 11 games plus finals this season and is set to expand to 12 regular-season rounds by 2025. There is potential for further growth to 14 rounds, depending on meeting key audience metrics, which include an average attendance of 6,000 fans and 100,000 average broadcast viewers, as outlined in the five-year deal signed last September.

AFLW boss Emma Moore spoke ahead of the 2024 season, highlighting positive trends from last year. The league saw 234,525 fans attend 90 regular-season games, with an average attendance of 2,606 and an average viewership of 54,969, according to the AFL’s annual report.

Moore, who took over from Nicole Livingstone in July, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season. “There’s great momentum. The fixture was released earlier this year than ever before,” she said at Tuesday’s captain’s day.

“We have a clear vision and well-defined metrics. We’ve developed a comprehensive marketing and branding campaign, working closely with all the talent and clubs to engage with their fans.”

Moore is confident about the season ahead, emphasizing the strong foundation for growth and fan engagement.

Collingwood captain Brianna Davey discussed the 2024 season, praising the devoted AFLW fans who regularly attend games. She stressed the need to attract new viewers who may not have watched women’s football before or haven’t followed it closely.

Davey aims to boost attendance and bring in more fans. She also noted that the gap between original and expansion teams is shrinking, thanks to a surge of young talent.

“Each year, the competition improves, players get better, newcomers shine, and the game’s pace accelerates,” Davey said.

In an exclusive interview with Riley Beveridge, new AFLW GM Emma Moore outlined her goals for the 2024 NAB AFLW season. Changes to this season’s fixture include midweek games between rounds four and seven.

Moore emphasized the importance of exploring new opportunities and adjusting the fixture based on viewership. “We need to test these opportunities and monitor their impact,” she said.

Moore, who has been in her role for a month, is focused on understanding and leveraging fixture opportunities to grow the game and meet key metrics.

Davey believes there is still significant potential for growth. “The biggest thing is exposure,” she told AAP. “We’ve made progress, but we need to keep pushing to attract more viewers and further the game’s reach.”

Collingwood captain Brianna Davey discussed the 2024 season, highlighting the dedicated AFLW community that consistently supports games. She emphasized the importance of attracting new viewers who may not have watched women’s games before or haven’t followed them closely.

Davey hopes to increase attendance and draw in more fans. She also mentioned that the disparity between the original and expansion teams is narrowing, thanks in part to a wave of young talent.

“Every year, the competition improves, players enhance their skills, the newcomers excel, and the game’s pace increases,” Davey noted.
