Aston Villa v Arsenal early team and injury news as 6 out and 1 doubt

Aston Villa host Arsenal at Villa Park in their first home game of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Aston Villa team news

Alex Moreno was left out of the squad on Saturday as Unai Emery said he was close to leaving the club. Nottingham Forest are interested, along with two clubs in Spain, and another in Turkey. The 31-year-old would be doubtful for the weekend given the uncertainty over his future

Boubacar Kamara is a long-term absentee after suffering an ACL injury against Manchester United in February. It is hopeful that Kamara will make a return to training next month.

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Emery said: “Previously the plan was to start in this month to train with us. He is not training with us yet but hopefully in the beginning of September he can join us, progressively thinking he can fully train in September or October and then he can play.”

Tyrone Mings is another player who suffered a significant knee injury. He has been sidelined for 12 months and was in the stands for their game against West Ham, but a return should be in sight soon.

Goalkeeper Robin Olsen suffered an injury to RB Leipzig three weeks ago and in his place has been Joe Gauci. Emi Martinez is the first-choice goalkeeper anyway, but Olsen was back-up last term.

Out: Boubacar Kamara, Robin Olsen and Tyrone Mings. Doubt: Alex Moreno.

Arsenal team news

Takehiro Tomiyasu is out with a knee injury and is expected to miss the opening month of the season; Mikel Arteta described him as a “few weeks away” from first-team action. Fabio Vieira, 24, is reportedly back in training as he recovers from a hip injury sustained during the pre-season. He should return to action this month.

Kieran Tierney who plays on the opposite side to Tomiyasu is another player that is suffering from an injury picked up in the summer. He was representing Scotland at EURO 2024 but recorded a hamstring issue, and despite being loaned out to Real Sociedad last season, the focus now is on getting himself back fit. In his news conference last week, Arteta said: “He has to focus on recovering in the best possible way, it’s been a terrible period for him again with the recent injury. We have to try to help him and make sure he gets back fit.” Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kieran Tierney, and Fabio Vieira all out.
