There was a special treat for the 5,000 people who attended Plymouth Argyle’s open training session at Home Park on Tuesday as head coach Wayne Rooney showed he could still impress with a football at his feet.

Manchester United’s record goalscorer played the last competitive game of his outstanding career in November 2020 for Derby County, before turning his attention to management with the Rams. However, the 38-year-old England legend still likes to be involved in training, and featured in part of the open session at Home Park, which was a school summer holiday bonus for lots of young members of the Green Army.

A short video of Rooney catching the eye in a small-sided game was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Matt Cory last night and by 12.30pm today had close to 370,000 views.

The clip, which lasts just 13 seconds, shows Ibrahim Cissoko, the Dutch winger on loan from French Ligue 1 club Toulouse, flicking the ball inside to Rooney, who never played a game at Home Park in his career.

The Pilgrims’ boss takes three touches and then deftly clips the ball over several opposing players with his right foot to a team-mate who has made a run in behind.

It was a brilliant piece of skill and vision and will have been appreciated by all those watching the training session from the Lyndhurst Road Stand, and probably Rooney’s players as well.

Matt Cory also posted the words ‘Needs to play himself centre attacking midfield!’ along with the video, although sadly that is a highly unlikely prospect!
