Portsmouth are reportedly not pursuing a move for Newcastle United defender Alex Murphy, as per a report from *The News*.
While Portsmouth are looking to make further additions before the transfer window closes, with center-back being a priority, they have decided not to target Murphy. Defenders Regan Poole and Tom McIntyre are still recovering from long-term injuries, leaving manager John Mousinho with limited options in central defense.
Ryley Towler, who was expected to potentially go out on loan after limited appearances last season, has instead started both of Portsmouth’s Championship matches so far, alongside Conor Shaughnessy in central defense.
This situation made the potential move for Newcastle United’s Alex Murphy seem logical, as Portsmouth had reportedly shown interest in the left-footed defender. However, *The News* has confirmed that Portsmouth will not pursue a deal for Murphy this summer. Although Murphy is anticipated to leave Newcastle on loan, with Championship interest noted, Portsmouth are focusing on other targets.
Murphy, who has featured in two competitive games for Newcastle and performed well during his time with Galway United in Ireland, is seen as a promising talent. Despite his potential fit for Portsmouth, the club’s focus is currently on different candidates for strengthening their defense.
Portsmouth have recently added Abdoulaye Kamara and Nicolas Schmid to their squad, enhancing their midfield and goalkeeper options. However, they are not done yet. The need for additional depth in central defense remains, and with Colby Bishop still sidelined, a striker could also be on their radar. Further departures of fringe players may also influence the need for additional signings. Given the importance of effective recruitment for their successful promotion last season, Portsmouth will need to get their transfers right to avoid relegation and establish themselves in the Championship.
