Former West Bromwich Albion player Carlton Palmer has expressed support for the Baggies’ pursuit of Will Keane from Preston North End.
Reports suggest that Albion had a bid rejected by the Lilywhites for their striker earlier this summer, as manager Carlos Corberan continues to seek attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
Keane, who joined North End from Wigan Athletic last summer on a two-year contract, scored 13 goals in his debut season with the club.
Given Albion’s financial constraints due to recent off-field issues, the 31-year-old could be an ideal budget-friendly option to boost the team’s goal-scoring capabilities in the coming season.
Carlton Palmer encourages West Bromwich Albion to finalize the Will Keane deal amid transfer restrictions.
Corberan has been forced to seek bargain signings this summer, as Albion are operating under an EFL-imposed business plan that limits their transfer activity.
With the transfer window closing soon, a move for Keane seems logical, given his proven Championship performance during his first season at Deepdale.
Although Keane’s goal tally dipped in the final two months of the season, he still managed to score 13 goals under then-manager Ryan Lowe, despite a disappointing end to their campaign.
Palmer believes Albion should complete the deal in the coming days, as Keane represents one of the best striking options within their current budget.
The former England international remarked, “West Brom are reportedly interested in Preston North End’s Will Keane. They haven’t done much business this summer due to financial restraints imposed by the Football League.”

“It’s reported that West Bromwich Albion had an initial bid of around £1.5 million rejected by Preston North End for Will Keane, but I believe Preston will eventually agree to sell him.
Keane signed a two-year deal last summer, so he’s now entering the final year of his contract at 31 years old, and he managed to score 13 goals for Preston last season, which is a decent return.
Given West Brom’s current financial limitations, they need to be mindful of their budget, and 13 goals is a respectable tally. Ideally, you’d want a player capable of scoring 20 goals, but with better players around him, Keane might increase his goal output, no disrespect intended.
I’m not surprised by this potential deal—it could be a smart move. Preston has struggled, and Keane’s goal-scoring has also suffered, with only two goals since mid-February.
Paul Heckingbottom and Preston North End can take advantage of Will Keane’s departure.
Preston has had a rocky start to the season, with Ryan Lowe leaving after the first game and interim boss Mike Marsh departing following a 3-0 loss to Swansea City last weekend.
Former Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom has now taken charge at Deepdale, with time left in the transfer window to make his own additions to the squad.
Palmer believes that selling Keane could allow Heckingbottom to bring in new players while he still can and cash in on a player with less than a year left on his contract.
He commented, ‘I don’t think 31 is old for a player, but clubs today are cautious, and at 32, Keane would likely only receive a one-year contract extension. So, this could be good business for West Brom, and it could give Paul Heckingbottom the opportunity to sign one or two players to shape the squad his way.
We’ll have to wait and see if West Brom return with an improved offer, but at least this move could give Heckingbottom the chance to bring in his own players.'”
