Former Celtic winger Mikey Johnston revealed that his summer transfer to West Bromwich Albion almost fell through. The Irish international made a £3m move to The Hawthorns on deadline day, following a successful loan stint at the club during the latter part of last season. During that loan, Johnston impressed with seven goals and two assists in just half a season.
West Brom were eager to secure the 25-year-old on a permanent deal, but they faced competition from other English Championship clubs, including Sheffield United and Burnley. Despite this, Johnston returned to West Brom and signed a four-year contract. However, he recently shared that the deal nearly collapsed due to financial fair play (FFP) constraints.
Speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands, Johnston explained: “I thought it was a long shot because of FFP issues. I knew I was likely leaving Celtic, and I expected things to go down to the last day. It was genuinely quite late, but I gave West Brom every opportunity to make it happen.”
Although he eventually made the move, Johnston made one final appearance for Celtic at the start of this season, in a cameo against Hibernian. Over his 93 appearances for Celtic, Johnston contributed to 25 goals and helped the club win 13 trophies.
