Carlton is exploring a range of solutions to address its ongoing injury crisis, which significantly impacted their 2024 season. The club is reviewing its medical processes after a year where injuries derailed their premiership aspirations, and they’re considering whether key forward Charlie Curnow will need ankle surgery.
Injuries affected around 40 percent of the squad throughout the season, forcing coach Michael Voss to pick from just 28 available players at times. The club’s high-performance boss, Andrew Russell, retired in August, and Sydney’s head of athletic performance, Rob Inness, has been hired as his replacement.
Brad Lloyd, Carlton’s general manager of football, emphasized that the club will prioritize addressing the injury issues this summer. The review will examine everything from training processes to list management, and Carlton hasn’t ruled out sending players overseas for specialized treatment. Availability will also be a key focus in future list management decisions.
Numerous players, including Adam Cerra, Sam Docherty, and Mitch McGovern, missed significant portions of the season due to recurring injuries. However, the club expects only a few off-season surgeries, with Curnow and Corey Durdin among those potentially requiring operations.
The Blues aim to avoid a repeat of this injury-plagued season and are looking forward to working with Rob Inness once Sydney’s season concludes.
