KRC Genk’s head of football, Dimitri de Condé, has disclosed that he attempted to bring Southampton’s Paul Onuachu back to the Belgian club during the summer transfer window.
In an interview with Genk’s official channel, shared by Voetbal Primeur, de Condé mentioned having discussions with the striker. Onuachu had a successful stint at Genk before moving to Southampton in January 2023, where he scored 85 goals and provided 10 assists in 134 games.
Although Onuachu excelled at Genk, he struggled to replicate that form at Southampton and spent last season on loan at Trabzonspor. The Turkish club made several attempts to re-sign him this summer, but they were unsuccessful. The Super Lig transfer window remains open until Friday evening, so Trabzonspor may still pursue him.
Genk also tried to bring their former player back but did not succeed. Mike Trésor, another notable player who left Genk, joined Burnley on loan in September 2023 and his move was made permanent earlier this year.
When asked about talks with Trésor and Onuachu, de Condé clarified, “I did not discuss Trésor, but I had several conversations with Paul. They were positive discussions, similar to those from last year. Paul mentioned that Genk feels like home and he hopes to return one day, but for now, he wants to continue his career abroad. Ultimately, we couldn’t finalize a transfer.”
Onuachu has yet to make an appearance for Southampton under Russell Martin this season.
