Celtic legend Lubo Moravcik is eager to see the Bhoys take on Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League, offering insight on what to expect from the Slovak champions. Bratislava made history by reaching the league phase for the first time, progressing through four qualifying rounds after defeating teams like Struga, Celje, APOEL, and FC Midtjylland. Under manager Vladimir Weiss, they also lead the Slovak Super Liga, though they suffered a surprising 5-0 defeat to MSK Zilina before bouncing back with a 5-0 win over AC Nitra in the Slovak Cup.
As Bratislava prepares for their final domestic match against Dunajska Streda before facing Celtic, Moravcik has shared his thoughts with fans. Speaking ahead of the clash at Celtic Park, he noted that Bratislava’s attractive style of football under Weiss gives them a real chance to get a result in Glasgow.
Moravcik explained: “I always root for Slovan Bratislava, except when they play Celtic, as the Bhoys are in my heart. Slovan has a chance because although Celtic has excellent players, they’re not quite at the level of top Premier League sides. If Slovan has a good day, as they did against Midtjylland, they can pull off a surprise, especially at home.”
He also praised Weiss, comparing him to the legendary Dr. Jo Venglos, and highlighted how Weiss has built up his team by focusing on playing attractive football, a rarity for Slovak teams in recent times.
As Celtic turns their attention first to this weekend’s fixture against Heart of Midlothian, there’s a growing sense of anticipation for next Wednesday’s Champions League opener. Brendan Rodgers will aim to break through the European barrier that has frustrated the club for years, but Bratislava, coming in as Slovak champions, won’t be underestimated. Celtic will need to be at their best to kick off the group stage in style at home.
