2 Killed During Shooting at Tailgate Party Outside Detroit Lions Game
“Tailgating, alcohol, and firearms are a dangerous combination,” stated Detroit Police Chief James White following a fatal altercation near Ford Field.

Shots were fired around 4:30 p.m. at Eastern Market, near Ford Field, as thousands gathered to watch the game and attend the tailgate party. Chief White indicated that the altercation stemmed from an argument among attendees. “It looks like the fight started over something that happened here,” White explained. “Tailgating, drinking, guns—they don’t mix.”
The fight began at Shed 6 on Riopelle Street, a popular gathering spot for fans during home games, but dispersed quickly. However, the confrontation resumed nearby. According to White, “The two fighters squared off, and one of them, a man from Oak Park, pulled out a gun and fired at least two shots.”
The person who confronted the suspect was fatally shot, while a second victim, who was rushed to the hospital, died the next day. Police on the scene responded immediately after hearing the gunshots. Chief White mentioned that investigators are still determining whether the victims and the suspect were acquainted.
The suspect, a man in his 30s who is licensed to carry a firearm, has not been publicly identified. Chief White also noted that the cause of the argument remains unclear but expressed concern about conflicts escalating into violence at large gatherings. “The lack of de-escalation skills is ridiculous,” White stated. “It was a beautiful day, and it shouldn’t have ended like this.”
Authorities have yet to file charges, and the investigation is ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information or video evidence to contact Crime Stoppers or the Detroit Police Homicide unit.
The Lions lost their game that day against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 20-16.
