The Toronto Maple Leafs recently signed Chris Tanev, recognizing his elite defensive skills. Gary Roberts, a Maple Leafs legend known for his scoring prowess and later for his exceptional training techniques, offered Tanev some valuable advice as he joined the team.

Roberts, who was a key figure in Toronto’s successful early 2000s teams alongside Mats Sundin, Bryan McCabe, and Joe Nieuwendyk, has since become renowned for his training methods, having worked with players like Connor McDavid. With Tanev having trained with Roberts throughout much of his NHL career, he sought out Roberts for guidance when joining the Maple Leafs.

Roberts advised Tanev to stay true to himself and to embrace the fan support. Tanev recounted Roberts’ words: “Just be yourself and be good to the fans and enjoy yourself. You’re definitely in the spotlight more here than maybe in Dallas or Calgary. Vancouver’s a big hockey market, but Toronto’s is even more intense.” Roberts emphasized that his best times in his career were with Toronto, reflecting his positive experience with the team.

This sage advice comes as Tanev prepares for a season under the intense scrutiny of Toronto fans and media. Roberts’ encouragement highlights the importance of authenticity and enjoyment in the high-pressure environment of Toronto hockey. For Tanev, staying true to himself, appreciating the fans, and loving the game could lead to a successful season—and perhaps a Stanley Cup run.
