The Denver Broncos will be missing right tackle Mike McGlinchey for an extended period due to an MCL sprain, as reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The injury is described as “significant,” and McGlinchey is expected to be sidelined for approximately one month, though further tests will determine the exact timeline for his recovery. This setback will impact a Denver offense that has struggled, particularly in the running game.
Currently, the 0-2 Broncos rank 19th in passing yards per game and are 27th in rushing yards with an average of 81.5 per game. The team had heavily invested in their offensive line under head coach Sean Payton, bringing in McGlinchey and left guard Ben Powers with significant free-agent contracts in 2023, and securing a lucrative extension for right guard Quinn Meinerz this offseason. However, the performance of the line has not met expectations thus far.
McGlinchey, who turned 30, spent his first four seasons with the 49ers and started every game during that period. Known for his run blocking, he faced criticism for his pass protection. After his tenure with San Francisco, McGlinchey signed a five-year, $87.5 million contract with the Broncos. Last season, he ranked 39th among tackles in PFF grades, consistent with his previous evaluations.
In McGlinchey’s absence, the Broncos might turn to Alex Palczewski, who replaced McGlinchey at right tackle following the injury. Veteran Matt Peart is also a candidate to step in. If McGlinchey is placed on injured reserve, he would miss a minimum of four weeks, further affecting the Broncos’ offensive line depth.
