Kennedy, who hopes to secure a role as an inside midfielder, has found himself further down the pecking order at Carlton, often playing in a half-forward position. His 2024 season ended on a challenging note, as he was hospitalized due to illness before Carlton’s elimination final against Brisbane. Despite making a late trip to Queensland following the birth of his son, Kennedy was subbed off before half-time in the season-ending loss.

Kennedy and the club have had “honest” discussions about his future, with the midfielder being given the green light to seek opportunities elsewhere during the upcoming trade period. However, Kennedy remains open to staying at Carlton, and his preference, if he moves, is to remain in Victoria.

Kennedy’s manager, Dave Trotter, spoke on *Gettable*, stating that while Kennedy is happy at Carlton and likely to stay, he will keep his options open if the right opportunity arises. Trotter clarified that Kennedy hasn’t requested a trade but would consider his options if a suitable offer from another Victorian club came along.

Additionally, Carlton has reportedly told small forward Matt Owies and key defender Lewis Young that they can explore their options during this trade period. The Blues are expected to target GWS free agent Nick Haynes and have also been linked with Port Adelaide’s Daniel Houston as potential defensive reinforcements.

The AFL free agency window opens on Friday, October 4, followed by the start of the trade period on Monday, October 7.
