Latest Derby County news from DerbyshireLive brings you what the Rams head coach has said about Nathaniel Mendez-Laing captaining the team

Derby County head coach Paul Warne.
Derby County head coach Paul Warne stated that Nathaniel Mendez-Laing will wear the captain’s armband as long as he maintains his strong performances on the field.

Mendez-Laing has captained the team since the season began, leading many to believe he has replaced Conor Hourihane as captain. However, Warne clarified that he hasn’t allowed players to vote for the captain this season, unlike last year.

Warne emphasized that Mendez-Laing has been given the captaincy for now, contingent on his continued contributions. “I haven’t conducted a player vote and I haven’t officially appointed him as captain,” he noted. “For the matches we’ve played, I’ve let him captain the side as long as his performance and attitude remain high.”

He added, “If he’s in the starting lineup, he’ll lead the team. I don’t place much importance on the title of captain; they aren’t like cricket captains. But I see him as a leader in the dressing room, alongside others like Curtis Nelson and Craig Forsyth.”

Warne praised Mendez-Laing’s commitment, especially his willingness to contribute defensively, which many wingers may shy away from. He mentioned that modern wingers need to work hard off the ball, referencing how Arsenal’s wingers perform. “I admire Nat’s attitude in training and how dedicated he is. His pride in leading the team is significant, and if it gives him an extra boost, it’s worthwhile because he’s one of my key players.”
