Wakefield Trinity claimed their first-ever Physical Disability Rugby League Grand Final title at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle on Saturday, triumphing over Wigan Warriors and Castleford Tigers. Fresh off securing their third consecutive League Leaders’ Shield, Wakefield kicked off Finals Day with a commanding 24-0 victory against Wigan.
Chris Mitchell opened the scoring down the right edge, followed by Michael Brown’s impressive 40-meter break to score under the posts. Lee Whiteley set up Darren Dean with a short pass before scoring himself after a slick exchange with Dean. Adam Fleming completed all four conversion attempts to round off a dominant display.
In the Grand Final against Castleford, Wakefield continued their strong form with a 22-6 win. Fleming opened the scoring with a try on the right flank and successfully converted it. Brown’s pass to Callum Parkinson set up another score down the left, and captain Alex Dickinson assisted Mitchell for a further try. Elliot Dixon-Griffiths capped off the afternoon with a 20-meter break for the final score, while Castleford managed a late consolation try.
Reflecting on the victory, Trinity Player-Coach Ben Nicholson expressed pride in the team’s journey, noting it was their fifth attempt at the Grand Final. He emphasized the importance of their preparation, professionalism, and solid defense throughout the season, which allowed them to remain unbeaten. Nicholson highlighted that their defense, which conceded only around 20 points all season, played a key role in securing both the League Leaders’ Shield and the Grand Final trophy.
The triumph marked a momentous achievement for Wakefield, celebrating their resilience and hard work after years of near misses.
