No Memphis Grizzlies Among Top 15 Players in the League
As the 2024-25 NBA season approaches, CBS Sports has unveiled its ranking of the league’s top 100 players, notably omitting any Memphis Grizzlies from the top 15. Instead, the list features two stars each from the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns, both rivals in the Western Conference. The Grizzlies do have four players in the top 100: Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Marcus Smart. This raises questions about Memphis’s potential for the upcoming season.
Morant’s Ranking Declines
Ja Morant, the Grizzlies’ dynamic point guard, was ranked No. 16, down from No. 14 last year. His drop is attributed to ongoing suspensions and injuries, having played just 70 games over the past two seasons. CBS Sports’ Jack Maloney noted, “At his best, Morant is one of the most exciting guards in the league,” but the uncertainty around his return to All-NBA form could impact Memphis’s chances of contending in the West.
Bane’s Shooting Prowess
Desmond Bane, a key scorer for the team, landed at No. 45, a three-spot drop from last year. Despite injuries last season, Bane averaged 23.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, showcasing his elite shooting skills, with a career 3-point percentage of 41.5%. His offensive capabilities are crucial for the Grizzlies’ success.
Jackson’s Two-Way Impact
Jaren Jackson Jr. ranks No. 43, down from No. 28, but remains a standout two-way player. During a tough 2023-24 season, he improved his shot creation and offensive responsibilities. Sam Quinn noted that while Jackson faced challenges, the full-strength Grizzlies could benefit from his development. As the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, he is pivotal on both ends of the court.
Smart’s Veteran Influence
Marcus Smart, the veteran guard, sits at No. 93, a significant fall from No. 56 last year due to injuries limiting him to just 20 games. CBS experts maintain optimism, believing Smart can regain his status as one of the league’s top perimeter defenders. His leadership will be essential in stabilizing the Grizzlies’ defense and enhancing their offensive execution.
The Grizzlies’ fortunes this season largely hinge on the health and performance of Morant, Bane, Jackson, and Smart. With a strong showing from these players, Memphis aims to rebound after a challenging previous season.
