Exclusive: Four Preston North End players who staked a claim to start against Blackburn Rovers

Preston North End manager Paul Heckingbottom prefers to have selection dilemmas, especially with the upcoming Lancashire derby on Sunday.

Fresh off their Carabao Cup victory over Fulham, the Lilywhites return to Deepdale to take on Blackburn Rovers. While John Eustace’s team has made a strong start to the season, PNE aims to claim the first bragging rights.

After securing a solid draw at Middlesbrough last weekend, Heckingbottom made eight changes for the match against Fulham, where Preston excelled and triumphed in a thrilling penalty shootout, winning 16-15. This performance has left several players vying for a starting spot.

**Kaine Kesler-Hayden**
Although he missed a penalty, Kesler-Hayden’s overall performance was impressive. While he prefers playing on the right, he has done exceptionally well on the left for PNE. His energetic and aggressive playing style, combined with his speed, adds significant value to the team. He didn’t play against Middlesbrough, but he should definitely be in Heckingbottom’s plans for Sunday.

**Josh Bowler**
Despite the emphasis on squad rotation, it seems Heckingbottom is eager to include the 25-year-old in the lineup. Bowler came on at halftime against Middlesbrough, showcasing the coach’s trust in him. His close control and technical skills have been promising, and he can create opportunities in wide areas, challenging full-backs. In derby matches, moments of brilliance can be decisive, and Bowler has that ability.

**Ryan Ledson**
The midfield competition is fierce, and Heckingbottom may opt for Whiteman and McCann again. However, Ledson is riding high after his performance on Tuesday, where he scored and converted two penalties, delivering one of his best displays in recent years. His confidence is soaring, and he thrives in derby situations. Heckingbottom appreciates Ledson’s demeanor, making it likely he’ll retain his place.

**Milutin Osmajic**
Osmajic has started both of his games under Heckingbottom in the Carabao Cup, and he worked tirelessly against Fulham, pressuring defenders consistently. We haven’t yet seen him partner with Emil Riis, who will be fresher for Sunday’s match. With Will Keane expected to be unavailable, it’s likely one of Riis or Osmajic will start. Both bring speed and strength, but Riis has a slightly more refined overall game. Osmajic has shown he can be a lethal scorer, and his chance in the Championship will come soon. He certainly made a strong impression against Fulham.
