BREAKING NEWS: Paul emphasis on Preston North End priority ahead of Blackburn Rovers

Preston North End (PNE) are gearing up to host Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon, with manager Paul Heckingbottom focused on getting his team back to full strength. After their thrilling victory over Premier League side Fulham in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, which included a record-breaking 16-15 win in a penalty shootout, PNE are now preparing for the first Lancashire derby of the season at Deepdale.

Reflecting on the Fulham match, Heckingbottom emphasized the importance of recovery, especially given the physical toll the game took on his players. “It’s important how we recover now,” he said. “A couple of knocks and cramps out there, but the players needed the game time. It’s good for practicing things, and the atmosphere after a win like that is great. Right now, they’re probably running on adrenaline.”

Heckingbottom acknowledged that there is always room for improvement in their performances, saying, “I’d be surprised if we played the perfect game. We’re always trying, but the key is understanding what it takes to win. Consistency in that approach will gradually improve performances, but it won’t happen overnight.”

He praised his team for being proactive on the pitch but stressed the need for patience as they continue to develop a front-foot mentality. “We’re becoming a team that’s on the front foot in every way. It will take time, but I like what I’m seeing—there’s eagerness and willingness. If things go wrong, that’s on me, but the players need to trust that it’s okay to make mistakes as long as we’re trying to get on the ball.”

During the Fulham clash, Patrick Bauer was forced off with a shoulder injury, and other players showed signs of fatigue by the end of the match. Substitute Andrew Hughes also required treatment after a knock but managed to finish the game. Heckingbottom expects Hughes to be available for Sunday, saying, “It was just a kick. He moved better towards the end of the game, but he’ll be sore.”

As PNE look ahead to the Blackburn Rovers clash, Heckingbottom remains focused on recovery and ensuring his team is ready for another intense battle on Sunday.
