BREAKING NEWS: Paul Vautin and Cameron Smith penalty decision issue is now serious

Reuben Cotter avoided the sin bin but conceded a penalty try after a contentious bunker review handed the Sharks an early advantage at Allianz Stadium.

After 13 minutes of end-to-end play, Cronulla’s Braydon Trindall opened the scoring with a penalty try.

Trindall attempted a grubber kick for himself but was brought down by Cotter before reaching the ball.

“That’s going to be a sin bin,” Cameron Smith commented on Nine.

Referee Ashley Klein referred the incident to the bunker, believing Trindall would have reached the ball if not for Cotter’s interference, justifying a penalty try.

Reuben Cotter tackled Braydon Trindall without the ball, leading to a controversial on-field decision upheld by the bunker, much to the dismay of Nine’s commentators.

“That’s wrong – you can’t say Trindall would get there,” Cameron Smith said during the review. “I’ve got some questions over that one.”

Paul Vautin added, “That is a stitch up.”

At halftime, Phil Gould remarked, “I don’t think it’s a try, but they deserve some luck.”

Just two minutes later, the Sharks piled on more pressure, with Cameron McInnes setting up Ronaldo Mulitalo and Trindall for another try. Cronulla dominated, with Mulitalo catching the Cowboys off-guard to extend their lead to 24 by halftime.

“That’s not Cowboys football,” said Johnathan Thurston at halftime. “If they don’t believe they can come back, they might as well have a shower now. They need to start competing, running hard, and focusing on the basics.”
