Exclusive: “Wasn’t the worst decision” – Director praised for agreeing big deal to sign Brighton player

Former Arsenal midfielder Tomáš Rosický has praised VfB Stuttgart for their acquisition of Deniz Undav from Brighton & Hove Albion during the summer transfer window.

Initially, the German club secured Undav on loan from Brighton in August 2023. He made a significant impact, scoring 19 goals and providing 10 assists in 33 matches across all competitions.

His impressive performances prompted Stuttgart to pay a club-record fee of €26m to sign the 28-year-old permanently in August, after pursuing him for much of the window.

Rosický, who spent five years in Germany playing for Borussia Dortmund from 2001 to 2006, shared his thoughts with Bild, expressing his admiration for Stuttgart’s growth over the past two seasons.

“VfB have made remarkable progress in the last two years – going from relegation struggles to the Champions League. This is not a coincidence from an outsider’s perspective. The team is well-structured, and Sebastian Hoeneß is an excellent coach who has shaped the team,” he stated.

The former Arsenal player, who retired in 2017 with Sparta Prague and now serves as their sporting director, highlighted the Undav transfer to commend Stuttgart’s sporting director, Fabian Wohlgemuth.

“From my experience, having a top coach isn’t enough; good management is also essential. Stuttgart has that with sports boss Fabian Wohlgemuth – they complement each other well,” Rosický explained.

“Bringing in a player like Deniz Undav from Brighton, for instance, was a smart decision. VfB have both sold and bought well.”

Undav’s performances for Stuttgart last season earned him a debut for Germany in March, and he was also included in Julian Nagelsmann’s Euro 2024 squad.

This season, the former Brighton striker has already scored five goals and provided an assist in seven appearances.
