Birmingham City sold Siriki Dembele to Championship side Oxford United at the end of the summer transfer window
Fry, who discovered Dembele while he was playing for Grimsby Town in 2018 and watched him rise to prominence at Peterborough United, had praised the Ivorian winger when Birmingham signed him from Bournemouth last summer. Dembele initially showed promise at St Andrew’s, as Fry expected, but struggled in the second half of the season, which saw Birmingham relegated to League One.
Despite getting a chance under new Blues manager Chris Davies, Dembele was ultimately sold to Oxford United at the end of the summer transfer window. Fry, who remains director of football at Peterborough, commented: “I was very disappointed because I thought it was a fantastic signing. I thought he would be a fans’ favourite with his runs and all that, but the people I still speak to at Blues said he didn’t work hard enough off the ball. It’s a pity it didn’t work out, but they got their money and more back by selling him to Oxford, so it’s another good bit of business.”
Dembele has already made an impact at Oxford, earning a place in the starting lineup and providing an assist for Ruben Rodrigues’s goal in their 2-1 loss to Bristol City.
