Exclusive: Former SFA referee questions the use of VAR on Daizen Maeda’s disallowed Celtic goal vs St Johnstone

Celtic’s emphatic 6-0 win over St Johnstone left fans buzzing about the scintillating football Brendan Rodgers’ side displayed. The Scottish champions were virtually flawless, overwhelming a stunned St Johnstone with five different goal-scorers. This marked the third consecutive game where Celtic scored five or more goals, reaching their 20th goal of the season without conceding in the Scottish Premiership.

However, the goal tally could have been even higher. According to former SFA referee Des Roache, Daizen Maeda had a goal wrongly disallowed by VAR. Roache raised concerns that the best angle of the incident wasn’t shown to the match referee, Don Robertson.

Speaking on the *Behind The Whistles* podcast, Roache said, “The most telling view was the one from behind the corner flag, which we didn’t see. When I first watched it, I thought it was worth a review. But the best angle, which wasn’t shown, revealed nothing wrong with the goal.”

Roache questioned why VAR, provided by Hawkeye, didn’t present this critical angle to the referee. “If we can see this footage on a Sunday morning, why wasn’t Don shown it? The footage exists, so it was entirely wrong, and I actually feel sorry for Don.”

Des Roache further sympathized with the situation, saying, “You could almost feel sorry for VAR there. I’d like to think if VAR had seen that angle, they wouldn’t have disallowed the goal. It was a clear goal.”

The use of VAR continues to raise more questions than it answers. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been vocal in his criticism of the technology, especially after witnessing another questionable decision during the 6-0 win against St Johnstone. This isn’t the first time VAR has come under scrutiny this season—during Celtic’s 3-0 win over Rangers, a Kyogo Furuhashi goal was also controversially disallowed, sparking more debate.

Ex-referees have referred to VAR’s operation in Scotland as “tin pot,” and despite efforts by the SFA and Willie Collum to improve transparency around how decisions are made, the system is still getting major calls wrong, frustrating both players and fans.
