Alfie May has revealed that he came ‘very close’ to signing for Huddersfield Town before scoring Birmingham City’s winning goal against them on Tuesday.
Birmingham swooped in to sign May from Charlton Athletic in early July, interrupting Huddersfield’s plans, and he has already netted five goals for the club. After spending two games on the bench, May returned to Birmingham’s starting line-up and secured their seventh consecutive victory, keeping them top of League One.
Huddersfield manager Michael Duff previously coached May at Cheltenham Town, and it seemed likely May would move to Yorkshire before Birmingham made their offer. When asked how close he was to joining Huddersfield, May responded, “Very, to be honest. The interest they showed was incredible, and Michael Duff, one of my former managers, played a big role in making me the player I am today.
“It was a tough decision. It’s just football. No hard feelings—hopefully. I haven’t spoken to Michael Duff yet, but that will happen in time.
“As a player, when you hear about interest, you learn bits and pieces, and Birmingham came in late. These things just happen.”
May’s goal made up for an earlier mistake in the first half when he missed a close-range chance, accidentally blocking a brilliant solo effort from Willum Willumsson.
“It’s probably the worst miss of my career,” May admitted. “There was plenty of time left, though, so I just had to move on. At 31, you don’t dwell on things like that, whereas maybe in my younger days it would’ve stuck with me. You just make sure to score the next one.
“He (Willumsson) said I should’ve left it, and I thought, maybe… I think it’s going in, but I was running at full speed, and it’s hard to judge. I was right on the line, and I still don’t know how I missed. That’s football, but the important thing is we left with the three points.”
