Huddersfield Town midfielder Antony Evans has recognized that the team “haven’t been performing well enough to get the results” necessary to compete at the top of the League One table. The Terriers are struggling with a disappointing form, suffering a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City on Tuesday, marking their seventh loss in eight matches across all competitions and their fourth consecutive league defeat.
As a result, Town has slipped to 15th place in the League One standings, and Evans believes that getting “back to basics” is essential to halt their decline. Reflecting on their recent performances, he stated, “Ultimately it’s been on us. We haven’t been performing well enough to get the results. I think it’s on all of us, the individuals (to deal with adversity).”
Evans highlighted the importance of reaction in challenging moments, emphasizing the team’s desire to win rather than just settle for draws. He expressed frustration, acknowledging that the squad possesses the capability to win but needs to demonstrate that ability more consistently. “Over the course of the season, if we want to get to where we want to get to, we’ve got to be doing that a lot more often,” he added.
The midfielder also spoke about the need for introspection after losses, suggesting that players should analyze the reasons behind their defeats, which can stem from individual errors or a lack of overall performance. He reiterated the necessity of returning to fundamental principles, such as effort and teamwork.
Evans is eager to contribute more significantly to Town’s success, having scored twice in 11 appearances this season. He expressed, “I think I can always do more. I’ve been brought to the club to bring a lot more than I’ve already shown. Obviously, I like to chip in with goals and assists, but the way things are going at the minute, I’ve just got to knuckle down, win the battle in midfield first, keep the ball, and then hopefully goals and assists will come.”
Looking ahead to their upcoming match against Barnsley, Evans remains optimistic about the team’s potential for a turnaround. “There is a lot of football [still to play],” he noted. Drawing from his experience at Bristol Rovers, where they improved dramatically after a poor start, he stated, “Anything can happen in football, and I think there’s an element of momentum. I think once you get on that wave, you’ve got to ride it for as long as you can.”
The match against Barnsley is set to kick off at 12:30 PM on Saturday and will be the first of two back-to-back encounters against the Tykes, with another meeting in the EFL Trophy scheduled for Tuesday.
