Oliver Glasner was left furious after Crystal Palace’s penalty appeal was dismissed during their narrow 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, following an incident where Virgil van Dijk appeared to pull Marc Guehi’s shirt.

Diogo Jota scored early to secure the win for Liverpool, but the focus at Selhurst Park quickly shifted to a controversial moment in the second half. Glasner believed Van Dijk fouled Guehi, obstructing the Palace captain’s effort to connect with the ball at the far post.

VAR reviewed the incident but upheld the referee’s decision, with the Premier League later clarifying: “The referee’s decision of no penalty for Van Dijk’s challenge on Guehi was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, as the holding was deemed neither sustained nor impactful on the play.”

However, Glasner wasn’t convinced. He said, “From what I saw on TV, it was a clear penalty for the foul on Marc Guehi.

“In that situation, Marc goes for the ball, and it affects his movement. I don’t understand why it wasn’t a penalty, it’s frustrating. Van Dijk held him with both hands. It’s obvious when Marc moves towards the ball. If the same foul happens on the halfway line, it’s a foul – a foul is a foul.”

He added, “I didn’t see it live during the game, but for me, it was clearly a foul. VAR should have intervened, but they didn’t.”

Despite the post-match frustrations, Glasner expressed pride in his team’s resilience after halftime, even though they couldn’t find an equalizer against the league leaders.

In his comments on Match of the Day, he said: “We responded well in the second half, created opportunities but didn’t capitalize on them. We also didn’t get the penalty. The second half gives me a lot of confidence moving forward.

“I don’t expect us to have numerous chances throughout the game, as they are well-organized, defend strongly, and rarely concede. But we created plenty in the second half, and that’s what we need to keep building on.”
