Sheffield Wednesday had a positive weekend, successfully distancing themselves from the Championship relegation zone.
The Owls capitalized on several missteps from their relegation competitors, securing an impressive 2-1 victory over Coventry City. Their joy was doubled when they learned just before 5 p.m. on Saturday that other results had also favored them. Portsmouth, aiming to break a poor streak at home against Oxford United, managed only a draw after Mark Mahoney’s goal was equalized by Louie Sibley’s strike with a little over 15 minutes to go. There was some surprise when Portsmouth manager John Mousinho replaced his scorer with Harvey Blair as the match neared its end, but he explained his decision afterward.
Mousinho stated to *The News*: “Mark was tiring towards the game’s conclusion, and he felt some discomfort in his groin, so we had to take him off. I didn’t want to, but it was something we discussed at half-time. We kept him on a bit longer than we ideally should have. He has never had to exert himself physically like this in a week before, so I’m very pleased with his performance. He scored well, but it’s unfortunate he didn’t score more.”
Wednesday enhanced their chances of at least maintaining their place in the second tier when Shea Charles netted a late goal to secure a 2-1 win over Coventry, following Djeidi Gassama’s equalizer after Jack Rudoni’s first-half goal. This victory, along with results from other matches, means Danny Rohl’s side will enter the international break four points clear of the relegation zone. Queens Park Rangers are now in the relegation spots after a 2-0 defeat against Derby County, where Curtis Nelson and Marcus Harness scored.
Luton Town’s 2-0 loss at Sheffield United has left them just one point and one position above the bottom three. Millwall also sits narrowly above the relegation zone after a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion. Stoke City remains three points clear following a hard-fought draw against Swansea City, while Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle recorded their third win in five matches, thanks to Morgan Whittaker’s dramatic injury-time goal that secured a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers.
