James Tavernier on the Rangers fans’ performance against St Johnstone, which he found “great to see”

Rangers captain James Tavernier is a man under fire this season and faced the Premier Sports music after the win over St Johnstone.

The 32-year-old captain of Ibrox played the entire game as the 10-man Rangers defeated the Saints 2-0 while playing in the Scottish Premiership.

Following Lyon’s Europa League humiliation, which put James Tavernier squarely in the sights of supporters, the outcome puts Rangers back on the winning track. Although there were several who predicted Tav would miss the team’s victory over the Saints, the captain showed up for the team and addressed the media after the game.

James Tavernier hails Rangers fans

James Tavernier was in a good mood after Rangers defeated St Johnstone 2-0 at Ibrox.

Player of the Match and Czech winger Vaclav Cerny joined the Gers captain; on a thrilling evening at Ibrox, the Wolfsburg loanee scored both goals. After the triumph, Tavernier would present Cerny with his Player of the Match trophy, but not before discussing the red card given to Ianis Hagi, who was making a comeback. At halftime against St Johnstone, the Romanian playmaker returned to the Gers lineup and returned to the field for the team.

Setting up Vaclav Cerny’s second goal, Hagi then saw red for a high challenge on St Johnstone star Benjamin Kimpioka, eventually leaving the pitch in tears. Whilst Tavernier has expressed his sympathy over the situation with teammate Hagi, the Rangers captain has also spoke glowingly about the reception the attacking midfielder received at Ibrox.

“We just probably missed a bit in the final third today,” Tavernier told Premier Sports. “But I felt that we defended really well.

“Just obviously disappointing to see Ianis (Hagi) get sent off after coming back but you seen the reception that he got today from the fans.

“So that’s great to see.

“But we are just happy to get the three points, clean sheet.

“It’s just about that consistency now, about getting the points, getting the wins, by any means necessary.”
