Exclusive: ‘You wish’: Cleary’s swipe after bold call from Eels greats

Penrith’s remarkable era of dominance has ignited a heated discussion about their place in rugby league history, with a Parramatta legend asserting that they wouldn’t hold up against teams from the 1980s.

After clinching their fourth consecutive NRL premiership against the Storm last weekend, the Panthers have firmly established themselves as the premier team of the modern era. They now join the ranks of the St George Dragons, who last achieved four straight titles in the 1950s and 1960s while securing an astounding 11 consecutive championships.

However, Eels great Ray Price contends that today’s stars wouldn’t stand a chance against his team, which captured three NSWRL titles in a row during the mid-1980s.

“Not a chance. They haven’t surpassed us,” he stated to *The Daily Telegraph*. “I don’t believe this Penrith side would defeat my Parramatta side.”

Since Price’s comments surfaced, they’ve sparked reactions from their western Sydney rivals, who continue to celebrate their achievements at the foot of the Mountains.

In a playful response, star halfback Nathan Cleary shared an Instagram story featuring Price’s remarks, accompanied by a cheeky emoji and the song “You Wish” by Skepta.

Cleary’s jab followed co-captain Isaah Yeo’s comments at Penrith’s official presentation night, where he highlighted the math behind the debate. “Four is more than three,” the lock forward pointed out.

Yeo also received the Merv Cartwright Medal as the club’s player of the year, wrapping up a remarkable season that will see him lead Australia in the upcoming Pacific Championships.
