JUST IN: “It is all my fault” Barnsley boss finally revealed why the match was draw

Barnsley 2 Charlton 2

There was late drama as Charlton and Barnsley both netted in stoppage time in a 2-2 draw at Oakwell.

Substitute Luke Berry scored two excellent goals as the Addicks came from a goal behind to go ahead in the 93rd minute before Max Watters late, late equaliser.

Miles Leaburn, making his first start in 11 months, nearly gave Charlton the perfect start within the first minute. The 20-year-old daintily danced into the Barnsley box but his left-footed shot was too close to goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina who gathered comfortably.

19 minutes later, the Addicks made their second close move of the first half. After a good one-two with Allan Campbell, Conor Coventry received the ball and passed it to Matty Godden with a first touch. The captain of the Addicks’ effort narrowly missed the crossbar.

Barnsley had their best stretch shortly after the half-hour mark after a sluggish start. Georgie Gent’s attempt from the outskirts of the area was brilliantly stopped by Will Mannion, who also punched away Josh Earl’s shot.

After Mannion made a stop against Stephen Humphrys, Davis Keillor-Dunn scored from close range on the rebound to give the home team credit for the brief burst of pressure.

Charlton began the game with a 4-box-2 shape, but they ended up matching the home team in a 3-5-2 second half. When Leaburn made a sharp move in the middle of the pitch to evade two Barnsley players, the Addicks had their first opportunity to score the second half. He passed to Godden, his striking partner, who hit Slonina with a straight shot.

Following another round of Barnsley pressure, Keillor-Dunn headed over. After that, Leaburn on the goalline and the crossbar both denied Jon Russell. As the Addicks lingered in the game, Mannion did a good job of keeping Keillor-Dunn out.

With 13 minutes remaining, Jones’ team scored spectacularly after overcoming the pressure. A half-clearance from substitute Matthew Craig landed to Berry at the edge of the penalty box, where his controlled volley under pressure arrowed into the goal after neither team could handle a bouncing ball.

After Slonina failed to stop Tyreece Campbell’s cross in the third minute of stoppage time, Berry lofted the ball over the goalie and into the empty net, giving the Addicks the lead.

Two minutes later, Watters’ well-executed penalty-area finish ensured that the points were split when the home team immediately responded with a loose ball.

On Saturday, Charlton will play Wrexham in front of a large crowd when they return to The Valley.
