Maurice says Panthers captain Barkov to play against Sabres after missing 8 games with injury

AP, Buffalo, N.Y. — After missing eight games due to a lower body ailment, Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov will make his comeback to the starting lineup on Monday night against the Buffalo Sabres, according to coach Paul Maurice.

His comeback was expected, and it coincides with the Panthers’ visit to Tampere, Finland, Barkov’s hometown. On Friday and Saturday, they will play the Dallas Stars in the NHL’s Global Series.

In a 3-1 loss in Ottawa on October 10, Barkov, the two-time Frank J. Selke winner as the NHL’s best defensive forward, was injured when he collided with the end boards while trying to stop Tim Stutzle from scoring an empty-net goal. A week after his injury, he started skating again. According to Maurice, the team wanted to take precautions before rushing him back into play.

With a 6-3-1 record, the Panthers, the defending Stanley Cup champions, lead the Atlantic Division after going 5-2-1 without Barkov.
