Watford has been told by pundit and former England international midfielder Carlton Palmer to oppose any possible transfer scenario that would entail the January sale of Giorgi Chakvetadze, who is rumoured to be on Wolves’ radar.
Overall, Watford has had a comparatively successful start to the 2024–25 Championship season. Tom Cleverley’s team is now tied for seventh place with Blackburn Rovers in sixth place after the first twelve games, and they are only eliminated from the playoffs due to goal differential.
Lately, the results have been more erratic; in their previous five meetings, Watford has won two and lost three. As we move into November, their very strong start in August—winning all five of their Championship and EFL Cup games—is undoubtedly doing some of the heavy lifting, but fans can still be quite happy with their team’s league standing.
Although it is tough to attribute Watford’s comparatively strong start to the season to a single person, it is hard to downplay the influence Chakvetadze has had so far.

Chakvetadze, who has started to introduce himself to the Championship this season, is at the core of the most of Watford’s positive actions.
The 25-year-old, who is currently in his second season at Vicarage Road, first joined on loan from Slovan Bratislava at the start of the previous campaign. Watford then permanently purchased him for a reported fee of £2.5 million back in February.
That investment is now providing them with genuine validation.
With just two players in the division surpassing him in terms of both opportunities created and projected assists per ninety minutes, Chakvetadze is currently the creative focal point of Cleverley’s team.

Despite having just one goal and two assists on his resume—and none in his past six games—the Georgia international playmaker’s inventiveness is unmatched, and it’s safe to say that he’s now proving to be indispensable for Watford.
In light of Wolves’ interest in Giorgi Chakvetadze, Carlton Palmer advises Watford to keep him.
Watford only signed Chakvetadze to a new five-year contract last month, perhaps in anticipation of impending advances after the year’s turn.
However, that hasn’t deterred any bidders, and according to a recent story from The Sun, Wolves and other unnamed divisional rivals have expressed interest in a bid to prevent relegation from the Premier League.
Palmer has encouraged Watford to keep the attacking midfielder in January at all costs, as the report claims that they are demanding a hefty £20 million to let him go.
Palmer exclusively told Football League World, “Wolves are planning a January move for Watford’s talisman Giorgi Chakvetadze.”
“Wolves need to add players because they are in danger of being relegated this season, sitting second from the bottom of the table and four points from safety with just two points.
“They must add players during the January transfer window, and Chakvetadze is being considered by other teams besides Wolves.
Watford, on the other hand, has gotten off to a strong start; they are currently in seventh place and tied with the sixth-place team in the playoffs. We all know what may happen, therefore it would be insane for them to trade their talisman now while they have a chance to qualify for the playoffs.
“Gary O’Neil has had a really tough time dealing with Wolves because they lack quality and let decent players go in the summer. They haven’t replaced those players.
“They need to add top players, but they appear to have enough to move out of the bottom three.
If Watford were to lose him during the January transfer window, it would be a huge setback and they would have to find a replacement. They would be really sad.
