Despite Hibernian’s interest on deadline day, Luke McCowan joined Celtic during the summer transfer window for a reputed £1 million.
The former sports director of the city rivals of the Easter Road team has now detailed Hearts’ previous interest in the midfield player and provided an explanation for the Tynecastle team’s decision to withdraw from the competition.
Speaking to Open Goal (via 67Hail Hail), former Hearts sporting director Joe Savage said that the Jambos were forced to give up on the 26-year-old due to Celtic’s interest in him and the resulting increase in price.
McCowan was one we were keeping an eye on at Hearts in the hopes that we could have had a sniff and a chance, Savage stated.
[Hearts failed to notice him] Most likely as a result of our hearing that Celtic was hovering. They were reportedly in and around it. Both thinking about it and not thinking about it.
“In the end, we believed that Luke was a better player than our midfield three because I believe he is a terrific player. We most likely lost a great deal of money as well. He ended up being about £1 million, I believe. At Hearts, we can’t afford that, at least not right now.”
On the day of the deadline, McCowan did join for Celtic, and the rest is history. Under Brendan Rodgers, the player has performed admirably each time he has taken the pitch.
The most recent instance of it occurred last Sunday, when McCowan scored a goal to highlight a starting position in the manager’s squad.
The midfielder then talked to the media about his experience at Celtic thus far, his mental connection with his football guru, and his goals for the future while wearing green and white.
