“Darrell Clarke’s No-Nonsense Message: Barnsley Youngsters on Notice!”– View

Some of Barnsley’s young players may have wanted to push their way into Saturday’s FA Cup match against League Two opponents after a Football League Trophy match in the middle of the week. They should prepare for disappointment if that’s the case.

At Port Vale, a team he managed and briefly played for that is currently leading League Two under Darren Moore, coach Darrell Clarke is reluctant to take any chances.

Additionally, Clarke’s 15 under-21 players in the Trophy, where the Reds lost all three games, have not impressed him. He has high expectations, and those who don’t meet them soon won’t be at Oakwell for long.

“I’ve been disappointed with performances in the Trophy – you want to see things that will catch your eye and not a lot has, to be honest,” he stated.

If they don’t, they’ll have to learn the hard way from me, so you’d like to think they’ve learnt from it.

“The players are the first to notice when we fall short of the high standards we should be meeting. Players can only be given so many chances, and if they don’t reach that level of consistency, it might be time for them to move on.

“Every day and every minute of their life should be held to standards. “Reach your ceiling,” I tell my guys, who are professional football players.
Over the years, I’ve managed a number of players that speak the talk but don’t act on it. Together with me, they will go by the wayside.

“You must perform to the levels I demand, whether you’re playing against Port Vale, a League Two team, or a trophy game.

“In three months of competitive games I’ve seen a lot of games, a lot of under-21 games, and I’m analysing all the time what I think we need and having conversations with the board and Mladen (Sormaz, the sporting director), my boss, to make sure we keep strengthening and move on the dead wood when we need to.”

Adam Phillips, Barnsley’s early-season standout player, is attempting to return from an ankle injury.

“Adam Phillips is back in full training, Sam (Cosgrove)’s getting there,” stated Clarke. “We’ll see how it goes with Adam but it’s promising.”

Jackson Smith returned with a “slight strain” after his loan at Grimsby Town.
