Only one day has passed since the 2024 baseball season ended, and the Orioles have already begun the action.
Alright, perhaps “action” is a bit strong. They failed to make a significant trade or sign a well-known free agent. Hopefully, those items will be on the schedule for later in the off-season. For the time being, the O’s executed a small trade by purchasing outfielder Daz Cameron back from the Athletics in exchange for cash.
As the scouting director for the Astros in 2015, Mike Elias selected Cameron in the first round, and the Orioles have already acquired him twice. Despite playing 110 games for Triple-A Norfolk in 2023 and recording a.798 OPS, Cameron never received a major league call-up. He had a longer opportunity with the Athletics last season, but he only batted.200/.258/.329 in 66 games. The Tigers, who acquired Cameron in the 2017 Justin Verlander trade, had three disappointing seasons with him during his MLB tenure.
Cameron, if he even makes it through the entire winter on the 40-man roster, will likely only be used as minor league depth for the Orioles in 2023. I suppose the O’s like him, but he doesn’t seem like the kind of player you need to jump on right away when the offseason begins. I wouldn’t mind if they continued to make one deal per day for the rest of the summer. If nothing else, there would be a tonne of Orioles material to write about.
Could the O’s offence improve in this fashion for the upcoming campaign? Melewski, Steve
With two strikes this season, the Orioles were excessively aggressive, according to the eye test, but what about the statistics? Melewski looks into it.
Possible Orioles contract extension for Westburg | MAILBAG – BaltimoreBaseball.com
Before I found out that Scott Boras is Jordan Westburg’s agent, I was about to comment that he would be a fantastic candidate to sign a fair extension. Well, anything.
The Baltimore Sun reports Chris Holt resigns from his position as pitching director for the Orioles.
I’m a little surprised by this departure. A few years back, Holt appeared to do a respectable job as the pitching coach for the Orioles. However, I might not be the most knowledgeable person on this topic because I wouldn’t recognise him if he approached me and introduced himself as Chris Holt.
Cameron is acquired, Holt quits the organisation, and the Orioles announce a number of front office advancements. School of Roch
Roch Kubatko has the specifics of the numerous other front office changes the Orioles revealed. I wish all of these people luck in their new positions.
Orioles history and birthdays
Is it your birthday today? Cheers to your birthday! Fernando Valenzuela, a Dodgers icon who tragically died last week, shortly before his long-time team won the World Series, would have turned 64 today. Fernando, that one is for you. The left-hander played for the Birds in 1993. Infielder Steven Tolleson (41), right-hander Eric Hanhold (31), and the late utility man Jim Pyburn (b. 1932, d. 2011) are other former Orioles born on November 1.
Due to a season that included 22 home runs and 86 RBI, infielder Ron Hansen became the first Oriole to earn the AL Rookie of the Year title on this date in 1960. Of the 24 first-place votes, Hansen received 22; the other two went to Jim Gentile, Chuck Estrada, and the Orioles. Being an O’s rookie that year was enjoyable.
Jerold Hoffberger, who had owned the Orioles during the organisation’s first 24 years in Baltimore, sold the team to Edward Bennett Williams on this date in 1979, giving the team a new owner. Williams owned the Orioles for almost ten years until his passing in 1988, having paid an estimated $12.3 million for the team.
