Chris Davies explains Birmingham City plan after reuniting Alfie May and Jay Stansfield
Birmingham City boss Chris Davies is keen for his two most prolific scorers to continue to build their understanding on the field of play
Following their reunion against Fulham Under-21s in the middle of the week, Chris Davies is happy with the growing understanding between Jay Stansfield and Alfie May.
Stansfield and May, who are competing to be the Blues’ top scorers this season, shared the pitch for an hour on Tuesday night. Stansfield scored twice and May once.
They both started together for the first time since the loss at Charlton about a month ago, and there were indications that they were getting along better, even though they were playing against youthful opponents who couldn’t match Blues’ calibre.
Whether they both start against Sutton United in this weekend’s FA Cup match is still up in the air, but Davies says the combination is crucial to the club and can only grow.
Yes, I do perceive an increasing comprehension. That will, in my opinion, grow more organically the more they practise and play together. They are both educated and skilful players, in my opinion, and I didn’t think it would take them long to learn one other’s advantages and play together.
They’ve occasionally had to adjust, and one is a little deeper than the other, but they’ve adapted rather well because I want to make sure that, given our dominance, there are goal scorers on the pitch.
That’s crucial because if you don’t, you can play well and be dominant, but your play won’t earn you the goals you deserve. That’s why it matters. They both score goals rather well.
Additionally, I believe that Willum [Willumsson] has a solid link with it in the last third due to his competence, subtlety, and ingenuity.
“I would say that Alfie and Jay are both quite intelligent athletes; they are both very smart and intelligent. They will work well together, and when they spot each other’s runs in the last third, they will try to play together. Since there are 17 new players, I believe they are developing a mutual understanding, as are some others.
You have to sort of learn the combos during games because there are a lot of changes and you don’t always train that much. As the season progresses, I believe that will increase.
Stansfield has scored six goals in nine Blues appearances so far this season, while May has scored six in seventeen despite being moved out of the centre position where he began the season.
