Newcastle’s winner is nodded home by Alexander Isak.
Newcastle once again carried out the ideal strategy.
Newcastle was like a wall, but Arsenal had a lot of possession. In defence, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall were outstanding. Hall won TNT’s Player of the Match award solely because it was thought that he had a more challenging role because he had to mark Bukayo Saka, but in my opinion, Tino, who was an absolute rock, should have won.
On 12 minutes, Alexander Isak nodded home an inch-perfect cross from Anthony Gordon, who was playing on the right side, demonstrating what happens when a right-footed player is placed on the right wing.
Over on the left, Joelinton and Joe Willock had a fantastic partnership and appeared to interchange positions frequently to keep Arsenal off balance.
At halftime, there was concern that Arsenal would regroup, but that was not to be.
With a one-goal lead at halftime, I was concerned that Mikel Arteta would muster his team for the second half, but the Gunners didn’t really come alive until the very end, when Declan Rice missed their finest chance of the game.
It was an unusual and peculiar feeling to not be at all concerned that they were going to nick anything, even if Arsenal had been holding Newcastle back for the last ten minutes. Newcastle wouldn’t have deserved to lose their opening points of the season after being in a winning position, so it would have been really cruel.
Fortunately, Newcastle managed to hold on and regain eighth position in the league ahead of the remaining games this weekend. What a great method to get back on track as the climb continues.
